When you download a dating app onto your phone or set up a profile on a website for singles, the game begins. The first step is to build a character
– your virtual “me”, that will draw as much attention as possible. Then it’s time to meet, and the carefully constructed online character is brutally verified. Who are you really – a person from your profile or someone completely different? Samira Elagoz looks for the answer, meeting men through Craigslist – an American advertising website. By discovering who the people she meets really are, Samira shows that girls are not just men’s toys. In “Craigslist Allstars” it’s the director who calls the shots, ironically sums up her interlocutors and
shows their weaknesses, if they deserve it. What can be learned from this movie about our continuously more and more virtual life? Will Elagoz, in
dozens of men (sometimes very eccentric), find somebody who will really impress her?
The meeting’s participants:
Samira Elagoz – director of “Craigslist Allstars”, visual artist
Klaudia Rachubińska – post-graduate student at the Film and Visual Culture Faculty (University of Warsaw). Fields of interest: feminist thought of the second and third wave and gender issues in music and pop culture
